The City
(Paris, Montmartre)
The
youthful years
"In 1953 when I turned 18, I set as my goal to live from
my art. I drew, I sketched, I painted. Day and night. Especially night, because
the darkness inspired me : the shapes of the shadow, nuances in the obscurity,
contrasting shades...
The little streets of Montmartre and of the Latin Quarter, the disorder of
the Alles, the mystery of the quays along the Seine and its bridges offered
an inhaustible source for my unbridly creativity."

The bohemian in Montmartre
"No sentimentality over the pain of main and
the picturesque aspect of misery. Here the images are true."
"From the heights of the rue des Saules you could see the ocean at Gennevilliers
and the sea of Saint-Ouen.From the Port-du-Tertre many heard the call of the
ocean-going ships. The rue des Saules led to the land of the Congaye... There,"where
the good and the bad intermingled", Marie-from-Tonkin awaited for the
children of the rue Lepic to come and tolk about home."
"Aworld
view where demand for beauty and taste for human witness melt together and
glow"
